It is said that every picture tells a story.
By Laura Brooks, While essentially true – and especially so with photography – the various other visual arts – drawing, painting and sculpture in particular – are best described as interpreting a story. From this context arises the philosophy behind the Annual Scottsdale Ranch Art Show and Sale featuring a Charity Auction, an indoor event to be held at the Scottsdale Community Center on Saturday, February 16,2019 from 10:00 am-4:00 pm. “At the most basic level we are storytellers,” says Scottsdale artist Laura Brooks, “yet meaning resides in the heart and mind of the person looking at it.” Art shows display the collective talents and myriad expressions of a community of artists…in this case, artists that live in the neighborhood, many of whom have displayed their art at this venue in years past. But like art itself, the program takes on a deeper resonance when the story behind the event is understood, which not only explains the silent auction to benefit the Virginia C. Piper Cancer Center, but ties to that organization and to cancer in general among the artists themselves, who have chosen the hospital outreach programs as beneficiaries of the auction. It has been said that sooner or later cancer touches everyone, at least to some degree. Such is the case with many of the displaying artists, beginning with the founding artist, Sharon Martin, a cancer survivor whose diagnosis coincided with the 2009 inaugural show. “We aren’t labeling this a charity event,” says Martin, whose sculpture depicting a post-treatment female torso is displayed in the lobby of the Piper Center, the result of a donation from a local benefactor. “Art is an expression of life, and when we share ours we are connecting with others in that regard. We provide an opportunity to view and purchase fine art, even world class art, at far below gallery prices.” Martin isn’t alone in that connection to the Piper Center. Cancer survivor Wendy Lyons displays her floral bouquets in Tina’s Treasures in the Piper Center gift shop, a career change from corporate work following her own treatment and recovery. “Nothing brings you back to your true purpose and a fuller life than a dance with cancer,” she says. “Artists we know have that feeling of living to the fullest, and we look forward to sharing our work and our passion with people from the community and beyond.” Twenty-one local artists will be displaying at this year’s event. Stop in and see the world through a fresh and passionate lens, and meet the artists who have created it. The exhibition program, sale and silent auction begins at 10:00 am and lasts until 4:00 pm, with refreshments available. Staff from VGPCC will be n site to answer questions and explain their programs.
